IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Dub
German
September 13, 1934 – August 1, 2025
James William "DUB" German, 90, a lifelong resident of the Benton Station community, departed this life peacefully on August 1, 2025, at home surrounded by those he loved most.
He was born on September 13, 1934, in McCaysville, Georgia to the late Norman and Maggie Adams German. Upon completing high school, he served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict as an air traffic controller. After his time serving our country, he returned home and began his career at Bowater Newsprint as a millwright, retiring after 37 years of dedicated labor. Throughout life, Dub found joy in fishing and maintaining his garden, and his most prized possessions came later in life with the births of his grandchildren and followed by 13 great-grandchildren with one more on the way. He was of the Baptist faith and loved his family with his whole heart. Dub will be deeply missed by all that had the privilege and blessings to have known him.
In addition to his parents, Norman and Maggie German, he was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Nancy Cheatham German, and wife of 10 years, Mary Jane Benton German; brothers, Ed German, Hobert German, Hoyt German, Bob German, Charles German, and Norman German; sisters, Bertha "Bert" Waters, Helen McAbee, Aileen Cowart, Charlotte Cook, and Maxine Rucker.
Left to cherish the many memories include his 3 children with their spouses, Ronnie (Ann) German Pam (Wally) Hindman, and Barry (Stefanie) German; step-children, Ruth-Ann (Scott) Shamblin, and Robert Benton; grandchildren, Tiffany (Scott) Bell, Courtney (Matt) Glass, Derrick (Sanna) German, Caleb (Allison) Hindman, Drew (Tucker) German, Laura (Eddie) Swallows, Clay (Natalee) Hindman, Hollie (Matt) Lowe, Todd (Cassie) Swafford, Chris (Beth) Shamblin, and Nick Benton; 13 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, special friend, Shelby Presswood, and a community of friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, in the chapel of Higgins Funeral Home of Benton, with Rev. Charles Cheatham officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Benton Memorial Gardens, with Derrick German, Caleb Hindman, Clay Hindman, Scott Loveless, Matt Glass, Drew German, Eddie Swallows, and Matt Lowe serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Bobby Burchfiel, Rex Hall, Farrell Kincaid, and Todd Swafford.
His family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, and from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, prior to the service at the funeral home.
The family wishes to express their appreciation to Hearth Hospice and their nurses Avery and Mollie for their genuine care and compassion.
