IN LOVING MEMORY OF
James E.
"Ed" Howard
July 31, 1943 – January 2, 2025
James "Ed" Howard, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2025, at the age of 81. Surrounded by his loving family, Ed left behind a legacy of faith, service, and dedication to those he loved and to the values he held dear.
Born and raised in a Christian home, Ed was taught the importance of hard work and ethics, which he exemplified throughout his life.
A talented athlete, he was a three-sport lettered athlete at Polk County High School and was inducted into the Polk County High School Alumni Hall of Fame. He carried that same determination into his career and personal life. Ed was extremely proud of the education he received from Benton Elementary, Polk County High School, Tennessee Technological University, and The University of Tennessee.
Ed married his childhood sweetheart and soulmate, Judy, remaining true to her through "till death do us part." Together, they built a life centered on love, family, and faith. He was a devoted father to Stan, Sue Ann, and Kendra, and a proud grandfather and great-grandfather to a large and cherished family.
A lifelong educator, Ed began his teaching career at Cleveland State Community College, and later worked in administration at Copper Basin High School, Polk County Board of Education as Assistant Superintendent, Polk County High School, and Trewhitt Jr. High School. He left a significant impact on countless students and colleagues, climbing the ranks of the administrative ladder with skill and dedication.
Ed served his country with distinction, spending two years in active duty during the Vietnam War and continuing with 11 years of active reserve duty, ultimately attaining the rank of Major. He was awarded National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device, Army Commendation Medal, Reserve Component Achievement Medal, 10 Year Reserve Medal and Presidential Unit Citation Medal. He was recently honored with a Quilt of Valor. His military service was a source of pride and an example of his commitment to something greater than himself.
Known for his hands-on skills, Ed had an extraordinary ability to fix just about anything—a gift he used not only for his own needs but also to help others. He played an instrumental role in assisting all three of his children in building their homes, showcasing his love and dedication to his family.
Many Polk County graduates have a diploma that Mr. Howard would carefully calligraphy for them, because high school diplomas are important.
In his retirement, Ed enjoyed a life of recreation, often spending time golfing, fishing, and cherishing the simple joys of life. Saturdays in the fall were devoted to cheering for his beloved Tennessee Volunteers football team. He loved playing his guitar.
Above all, Ed was a man of deep faith. He was most thankful for his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, whose sacrifice on the cross gave him the promise of everlasting life—a promise he now rests in peace with.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents Kenneth and Dovie Rogers Howard, and his sisters; Virginia Wiley, Billie Ann McClary, Joyce Moorhouse, Sue Campbell, and an infant brother Kenneth Jr.
Ed is survived by his wife, Judy of 62 years; his children, Stan (Revonda) Howard, Sue Ann (John) Patterson, and Kendra (Chris) Johnson, his many grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; and many extended family members and friends.
A celebration of Ed's remarkable life will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, January 6, 2025, at Higgins Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at Benton Memorial Gardens, with Military Honors.
Family and friends will gather from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, prior to the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital @ stjude.org.
Ed Howard will be remembered as a man of faith, service, and unwavering love. His legacy will live on through the lives he touched and the example he set.
