Jean Burchfiel, 88, a lifelong resident of Benton, departed this life peacefully on Friday evening, September 25, 2026, at her home surrounded by those she loved most.

She was born on November 6, 1937, in the Oak Grove community, to the late Ernest Lee and Kate Lawson Cummings.

Throughout life, Mrs. Jean loved her family the most and she prayed for each one by name daily. She was a loved and devoted wife for 71 years, a caring and compassionate mother and grandmother, and a true friend to all who knew her. An active member of First Baptist Church of Benton, she was willing to serve in any capacity. A few of her roles at the church included Sunday school teacher, Bible school teacher, TeamKids helper and lead Christmas programs. During her junior year of high school, she was crowned Homecoming Queen and was kissed on the field by the football captain, who later became her husband, Bobby Burchfiel. Jean enjoyed cooking on Sunday afternoons, often feeding more than 40 people, and their gatherings became known as “The Feast.” Above all, she loved the Lord and her family and will be deeply missed.

On her passing, “The Militant Church is one poorer, but the Triumphant Church is one richer.”

In addition to her parents, Ernest L. and Kate Lawson Cummings, she was preceded in death by her brother, Thomas Lee “Sonny” Cummings and one son-in-law, Carl “Hoss” Maples.

Left to cherish the many memories include her beloved and devoted husband of 71 years, Bobby Burchfiel her beloved children, Dianne (Buddy) McClary, Renee Maples, and Jeffrey (Gina) Burchfiel; cherished grandchildren, Jacob (Kelley) McClary, Dustin (Ashley) McClary, Adam Maples, Daniel (Erin) Maples, Jim-Bob (Tera) Maples, Jacob (Shyenne) Hicks, and Brooklyn (Tim) Brown; great-grandchildren, Bearrett McClary, Tennessee McClary, Irelynn McClary, Sage-Marie McClary, Destini Polk, Christopher Polk, Makayla (Evan) Hicks, Emerson Maples, Carly Maples, Marley Spurling, Asa Spurling, Ivorie Hicks, Mylie Hicks, Finley Hicks, and Beau Maverick Brown; great-great-grandchild, Truett Hicks; special sister-in-law, Shelby Presswood; and special friend, Nancy Foote. Several extended family members and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, at First Baptist Church of Benton, with Dr. Robert K. Speights officiating. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at Benton Memorial Gardens, with Jacob McClary, Adam Maples, Dustin McClary, Daniel Maples, Jim-Bob Maples, and Timothy Brown serving as pallbearers.

Her family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, prior to the service at the church.
