Obituary

Jessie T. “Ted” Long, age 92, of Old Fort, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on October 26, 2026, at the Tennessee State Veterans Home, surrounded by his loving family. He is now reunited with his beloved soulmate, Phyllis, in their eternal heavenly home.

Born in Polk County, Tennessee, Ted was the son of the late Herman and Chattie Bates Long. He proudly served his country in the United States Army with the 516th Airborne Infantry Regiment during the Korean War. Following his military service, he worked as a truck driver for ADM Milling Company for 11 years before retiring.

Ted was known for his contagious laughter, quick wit, and unforgettable smile. He had a gift for bringing joy to those around him and was always ready to lend a helping hand. Above all, he cherished his family, who were the greatest joy of his life. His kindness, humor, and strong work ethic leave behind a lasting legacy.

Ted was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Carolyn Wilson and Helen Cross; and his brother, Kenneth Long, all formerly of Cleveland, Tennessee.

He is survived by his brother, Eddie Long, and wife Nancy; his sons, Jessie Long and wife Shelia of Georgetown, Tennessee, and Herman “Teddy” Long of Old Fort, Tennessee; and his daughter, Jessica Shook, and husband Charles of Old Fort, Tennessee.

His beloved grandchildren are Hazel Long, Jesse Long, Emily Long, Trenton Long, Kali Lanning and husband Gatlin, Cloie Richardson and husband Clayton, and Virginia Branam and husband Matthew. He also leaves behind his great-grandchildren: Denny, John, Clark, Coleson, Avera, Sutton, Griffin, Walker, and Charlee.

Ted will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. The laughter he shared, the memories he created, and the love he gave so freely will live on in the hearts of his family for generations to come.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 30, 2026, in the chapel of Higgins Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Fort Hill Cemetery with military honors. Charles Shook, Jesse Long, Matthew Branam, Gatlin Lanning, Trenton Long, and Clay Richardson will serve as pallbearers.

His family will receive friends from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Friday, prior to the service at the funeral home.
