Mildred “Millie” Shelton, 91, of Benton, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on May 15, 1935, in Quincy, IL, to the late Ernest and Stella Crabbe Winget.

Millie was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church and enjoyed each time she was able to go when able. She loved listening to gospel music, quilting, and playing with her grandbabies. A few of her favorite things to do included washing her dishes and cleaning. She enjoyed a good hamburger and was a lover of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. She was loved by all who knew her and will be deeply missed.

In addition to her parents Ernest and Stella Crabbe Winget, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 65 years, John Avery; son, Johnny Shelton; siblings, Oscar Winger, Anna Miller, Susan Winget, Helen King, JoAnn Winget, Donnie Winget, Harry Winget, Larry “Bubbles” Winget, Ernie Winget, Janet Winget, and Rita Winget.

Left to cherish the many memories include her loving children, Bobby (Jeanie) Shelton, Avery Shelton, Tommy (Tina) Shelton and Zeb Shelton; 16 grandchildren, and several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; sister, Alice Winget.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, 2026, in the chapel of Higgins Funeral Home of Benton, with Pastor Johnny Townsend officiating. Interment will follow at Delano Cemetery, with Caleb Shelton, Cole Shelton, Heidi Beck, Jako Shelton, Bobby Shelton, JR., and Mason Beck serving as pallbearers.

Her family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, prior to the service at the funeral home.
