Oliver "Gene" Lewis, 84, of Benton, passed away Tuesday, December 10, 2013. He was a retired carpenter and a veteran of the Tennessee National Guard. He was a member of Zion Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, John T. and Jane Padgett Lewis; wife, Maxine Passmore Lewis; infant son, Scotty Lewis; brothers, John "T-Bone" Lewis and James "Nelse" Lewis; and sisters, Mary Ellen Moore and Betty Lewis. Survivors include his son, Steve Lewis and wife, Patsy of Benton; grandsons, David Lewis and wife, Melanie and Denis Lewis and wife, Jamie, all of Benton; great grandchildren, Conner Lewis, Haley Crabtree, Gena Lewis, Caiden Lewis and Alaina Lewis; brothers, Houston Lewis of Strawberry Plains and Franklin Lewis and Larry "Diddle" Lewis, both of Benton. The funeral service will be at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 12, 2013 in the chapel of Higgins Funeral Home with the Reverend Harold Firestone officiating. Interment will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday in Benton Memorial Gardens with a white dove release ceremony concluding the service. His family will receive friends from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home prior to the service.
