October 9, 1931 – February 6, 2017
Zelda Rogers Hammons, 85, of Benton, TN passed away Monday, February 6, 2017 at the home of her daughter-in-law, Rita Hammons. She retired from Benton Elementary after 27 years as school secretary. She was Polk Co. Chairman for the March of Dimes for many years. She supported Frank with his involvement for Little League sports. Most of the time she was behind the scenes and worked in the concessions stand. She also supported her children and grandchildren in all their activities.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank D. Hammons, Sr.; son, Frank D. Hammons, Jr.; parents, Leonard and Vesta Swafford Rogers; brother and sister-in-law, R. L. and Irene Rogers.
She is survived by her daughters, Joan Hammons of Benton, TN and Joyce Hammons (David) Combs of Cleveland, TN; daughter-in-law, Rita Hammons of Benton, TN; grandchildren, Troy Hammons and Jennifer (Tim) Ledford; step-great grandchildren, Tyler and Brandon Ledford, and the tremendous joy of her life, her great grandchildren, Zady Ledford, Elise Hammons and Jackson Hammons; brother-in-law, Abie Hammons; sisters-in-law, Betty Hammons and Florine Hammons. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at Higgins Funeral Home in Benton, TN with the Reverend Mike Hazlewood officiating. Interment will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 9, 2017 in Zion Baptist Church Cemetery. A white dove release ceremony will conclude the services.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at the funeral home prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, 6221 Shallowford Road, Chattanooga, TN 37421 or Hearth Hospice, 100 Mitchell Road, Fort Oglethorpe, GA 30742.
